Since i first started in MSN Chat over three years ago, ive come a very long way. Started out not even knowing what "LOL" means, (which means laugh out loud im informed)and now have been a Chatroom moderator for MSN's Australian network and now, am classed as a Script & Bot user who works behind the scences in MSN Chat. Downloads - UPDATE Ok, My download site doesnt seem to be working at all at the moment (Thank you to the person left anonomous for informing me of the broken link) Basically, Ive uploaded the files - test run and had a friend test the download site. But since logging back into my site for an update - The links dont seem to work anymore ( And now the site will not even upload the files ) So, after a goodnight's sleep, a pub talk, and recomendations.. im using a TOTALLY different site for downloads. Until i am happy this new site does not fail on me the link will not be posted. Im sorry on behalf of the site that let me down for any inconvenience caused by this total lack of a brain cell and assure you there will be a download site up and running relativly soon. News MSN Chat Closure: Some of us will be staying at least for awhile, others won’t be given the choice of staying or leaving; they are being forced to leave. MSN’s reasoning behind this was child safety and the proliferation of pornography, and felt the most cost effective way to deal with the situation was to simply become a subscription service in some markets and deny access to the remaining global areas. There has been much debate on whether this is the whole story, or whether MSN is planning on removing all free services such as Hotmail and eventually Community Groups and possibly even Messenger(Seemingly just chat). The success of closing anonymous chat is a hot topic. Seeing as people are still able to join Community Groups on MSN, and make use of the Group’s private chat room, how is this any different from the myriad of open chat rooms currently available? How will this improve the safety of minors online? It’s a nice thought, that pedophilia on chat servers will end with MSN’s move to subscription, whereas in reality it will only move them elsewhere. It is more likely that MSN’s motivation was to end its free chat was financially driven. The advertising space on MSN’s chat client was to theoretically help offset the costs of running their chat service. It has been proven that this was not the case. People were seeing the ads but not clicking on them, or they were using pop up blockers and not seeing them at all. Those on scripts and bots could chat ad-free. Still others lived in areas where some products being advertised were not available. It is almost ironic with pornography and pedophilia being cited as reasons for closure, one of the biggest advertising sponsors MSN had was a dating service with a very borderline message regarding the benefits of joining. MSN is involved in many legal processes at the moment, and while the corporation is worth billions of dollars, it seems to be on the losing end of many cases. Corporations don’t like to use their profits to pay for legal suits, especially when they are the defendants. When the payouts become big enough, it tends to cause a company to look at its operations and make decisions on what it can do without. MSN Chat seems to have fallen into the “we don’t need that” category. Imagine the costs associated with running a service as large as MSN’s, which included not only the basic chat and its access database, but the programming support, the Admins, Sysops and Guides, the profile databases and the community group databases. To all of the above, add shareholder liability. Shareholders buy stock in a company to make money, not to become involved in child safety issues on a free chat service. If they feel that issues cited by MSN were of concern, you can rest assured they would put pressure on the Board of Directors to be making changes, especially in the wake of Microsoft’s latest court loss. From a parental point of view, I feel that MSN chat could have done a lot more to ensure child safety if they truly wanted maintain their current global free chat service. On the other hand, why pour more time and money into a service that is nothing more than a publicity tool, which provides little in the way of financial return. That said, it is the parents’ responsibility to be aware of what their children are doing online. It’s no different than knowing where your kids are and whom they are with or interviewing the baby-sitter before entrusting him or her with your child. Has MSN made a smart decision in closing its chat services? There are only two directions it can go. MSN Chat will either thrive under the new format and become a moneymaker, or the lack of people willing to pay for MSN’s services will decline; but that is all in the future, and only time will tell. Microsoft - Longhorn Oh dear, Bill Gates is at it again. From what was being tagged as a minor upgrade to now a complete overhaul and since its work started in summer 2001 and an expected release in 2005 (although, we know that is liable to change) - MS (MicroSoft) are releasing a new OS platform called "Longhorn". Now tell me. Your sitting there thinking "Oh great - another new mess up" and your whinging, moaning, complaining are'nt you? But wait - some good news. MS have taken some wish lists to heart and put in quite a few features. XP certainly contains a lot of features and functionality that 9x and Windows NT/2000 users longed for, and we can expect the trend to continue with the next generation of Windows. A new interface is also planned (new paintjob and design basically) so something else to brighten up our rainy days before we rush for the display buttons to tweak back to the much loved Classic View on XP. This is all dependent on what the "beta testers" think of its performance. **Note: beta tester is someone who gets to push all the little buttons before we get a chance to** Currently Longhorn is in its baby stages or "Alpha stages" so its far from finished so save those coins yet!! To be quite honest, This is kind-of the nuts and bolts stages of the new OS but my good freinds have been emailing me details and links like crazy. Click on the following link for a sneaky preview.
