The Club

The London Sports Club is an organisation which aims to promote and organize sporting activities for blind and partially sighted people.
It was first formed in the 1930's and its objectives have been maintained to the present day, working to improve the opportunities for visually impaired people to participate in sport of all kinds on a recreational or competitive basis. Its members take part in sports including football, cricket, swimming and ten pin bowling.

The club has a strong football following and players are take the field in friendly and competitive matches throughout the year but mainly between November and May when our team competes in a National five-a-side football league which consists of two divisions.
Teams from around the country, including Manchester, Birmingham and London battle it out and promotion and relegation issues are resolved at the end of the season, after six action packed tournaments.

1. Chairman’s Letter by - Keith De Jersey

Hello all, I hope this edition finds you well. I would like to begin by offing condolences to friends and family of Alan Noakes who passed away in the spring, he was a long time member and participated in the life of the club, particularily swimming and will be greatly missed by all, may he rest in peace.

Moving on from this sad news you will find included in this edition is a copy of the club constitution and minutes of the last AGM. We will be reviewing some areas of the constitution at the AGM.

In the meantime I wish everyone a very merry Christmas and a happy new year.

Please note that the next AGM is to be held on Friday January 16 2004 in the committee room at RNIB Judd St. London W1. We have booked the function room at
O’Neills, on the corner of Judd st and a buffet is provided after the meeting, a bar is available within the function room if you care to indulge.
2. FUNDRAISING COLLECTION

A fundraising collection day was organised for Friday 25th July at Liverpool Street station. Although there was no great clamour of people wishing to help me as volunteers, we did have a team of four people for part of the day collecting money for the club. A total of £350.94 was collected. At least two more collections are planned for this year as it is important the club improves its ability to raise money by itself and not just waiting for money to be given to the club in the form of grants. I want to re-interate that if anyone is keen to help out collecting money for the club, please let me know and we can include you in a coolection team, but club members should not be organising collections by themselves without the committee giving their consent. For details of future collections contact Russell Bailey - Tel 0208 655 0282

3. SUMMER SOCIAL

On Saturday 26th July 2003 London Sports held a summer event at the Black Lion & French Horn Pub near Regent St, London W1. The evening went well and was attended by about 25 people. There was music, a good buffet of food and we rounded off the night with a raffle. Prize winners included, John Hollywood geeting a Radio CD player (letting me knowing when you organise the party John), Ian Hamlyn getting the food hamper, Simon Wilkes got the champagne, Gary Martin won the collection of CD’s, Jason Roberts got the brandy and glasses, but also wine, record vouchers, chocolates were won by other people. I hope the club make this a regular summer event but if anyone has got any suggestions for ideas for the summer months like a barbeque, a more formal dinner evening, a quiz night, let me know. Russell Bailey Tel 0208 655 0282

4. SWIMMING

The Porchester has now reopened after a period of refurbishment. We are back to our normal slot on a Tuesday evening between 7 & 8 pm. If anyone is interested in coming along but is not sure of the way, Ian will meet you at Royal Oak station Hammersmith & City line at around 6.30 and take you there, all you need to do is ring him on 020 7431 5768

5. ROWING REPORT

The rowers have had a good season this summer, with a few new young faces turning up and the Oriel Club at Hammersmith Bridge have expressed and interest in rowing for the blind.

Unfortunately there will be no more rowing until the spring of 2004. Anyone wishing to come to this in the new year should contact Ian 020 7431 5768. The usual meeting point is at Marble Arch ticket barrier on the Central Line at 10.15 AM on Saturdays.

6. TEN PIN BOWLING

This is normally held on the last Friday of each month and the meeting point is at East Finchley on the Northern Line High Barnet or Mill Hill East branch not Edgeware. We meet here between 6.15 – 6.30 pm and take a short bus ride to the Hollywood Bowl, but with that line being down and unpredictable at present, we may have to rethink a new venue. Anyone not sure contact Ian
020 7431 5768 or John Hollywood – 020 7687 1831

7. NOTE FROM MEMBERSHIP SECRETARY

Please note that memberships are now overdue for renewal, anyone who has not already renewed theirs should do ASAP. 8. CRICKET REPORT

Despite communications with the organiser for this section, no report has been submitted for this edition, or any alternative arrangements made for the provision of a report.

9. SENIOR FOOTBALL

The summer is over so it must be time for a new football season. That doesn’t mean to say the football organisers haven’t been working hard to make this a great season for London Sports. When the whistle blows for the start of proceedings, the other clubs will have a shock because a new long term strategy is now in place to revitalise the squad, bring some fresh young talent in and let the experienced players know that their places aren’t guaranteed. The squad for 2003/04 is as follows:-

J Roberts, C Berry, D Ryan, A McKeating,
D Aldwinckle, R Kershaw, A Kalavazides, A Walsh,
D Kail. R Bailey, L Traore, D Leach, J Bird, K McGrath,
G Martin and M Paton

We played in a pre-season cup competition on Sat 4th October in Birmingham at the Aston Villa Academy. This was the first time this venue had been used. The pitches were a type of Astroturf. It turned out to be a good surface for football. The competition had an initial group stage, one group of 4 teams and one of 5 teams, which we were in with Inter Cosmos, Birmingham, Hereford and Avon. Our results were as follows:-

London Sports 0 – 4 Birmingham
Avon 2 – 2 London Sports
London Sports 0 – 5 Inter Cosmos
Hereford 1 – 6 London Sports

Unfortunately, 4 points was not enough to get us through to the knock-out stage but it was a very satisfying performance from the team. Loughborough Lions beat Birmingham 2-0 in the final. For London Sports It’s looking good for the league season when it kicks off on 8th Nov 2003 in Wigan. So don’t forget to keep in touch with how the team is doing via our website http://www.123freehost.co.uk/sites/londonsports/

TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR THANK YOU
On Friday 17th October Tottenham Hotspur Football Club gave London Sports a full set of football shirts for the new season. They are a fabulous purple/dark blue colour and they will come in very handy for the football team. So well done you Spurs! and a big thank you from our club (And that’s from an Arsenal supporter).

10. JUNIOR FOOTBALL

This year our club has been very involved in developing football as a sport for young boys and girls, and to provide visually impaired children with an introduction and opportunity into football. This project was started and is currently run by Alan Whetherly at the London Sports Forum charity.
Monthly football coaching sessions are held at Arsenal and Charlton Football Club with professional coaches working with youngsters who primarily come from London and the suburbs. Back on May 31st 2003 a special Arsenal FC day was held at Highbury, with coaching and football competitions. This was attended by around 80 children and was a great success.
This development programme is continuing and LSF hope to secure funding to extend this work. The annual inter-schools five-a-side football competition will be taking place in Birmingham on January 31st 2004 and LSF/London Sports Club junior boys and girls teams are to be entered for this. In addition, it is planned that a junior football competition will be arranged for the New Year to be held in London, funded by LSF.
This is a very important initiative for London Sports Club to be involved in and these new links could prove useful in encouraging young people to take up a sport as well as join our club. Contact Russell Tel 0208 655 0282

11. CHRISTMAS PARTY NIGHT

Christmas is coming so that means its party time. This time it’s a party with a difference and your club is hosting it. On Saturday December 13th there will be a Christmas party held at the exclusive function room at Pentonville Prison, North London between 7.00pm and 12.30pm. There will be a disco, a food buffet, a raffle and there will be a licensed bar serving reasonably priced drinks. So if you want to go to a party with a difference and have a great time, make sure you get your tickets in advance. You wouldn’t want to miss out. Tickets are £5 per person and one free raffle ticket is included in the entry fee. Tickets can be obtained from Russell on
020 8655 0282.

12. CONSTITUTION

You will find a copy of the club’s constitution enclosed as a separate document attached to your newsletter. The reason for this is that we will be making a few amendments to it at the AGM in January 2004.

13. MINUTES OF THE AGM 2003

Don’t worry I will be sending these minutes to you all separately, in plenty of time for the AGM. You will probably receive these mid December.
