LANCASHIRE GERMAN SHEPHERD RESCUE

WE ARE NO LONGER ABLE TO ACCEPT DOGS WITH A HISTORY OF BITING OR BEHAVIOURAL PROBLEMS FOR REHOMING BUT ARE HAPPY TO GIVE YOU ADVICE TO OVERCOME THE PROBLEMS YOU MAY BE HAVING

We are recognised by the Kennel Club as a Breed Specific Rescue. And a Member of the Association of Dogs & Cats Homes.

If you are looking to give a home to a rescue GSD in the hope of taking on a dog who is already trained please think again. Many of our dogs do have impeccable manners and are beautifully well trained as they have come from good homes, perhaps from a marriage split up or change of circumstances that mean that a loving owner can no longer take care of their dog as they would wish to. However, some of our dogs have unsettled backgrounds, and may need a lot of support to help re-socialise them. We do not always know the background of our dogs and can only tell you what we have found out about them whilst they have been living with us. There are situations you may come across in your home that upset them that we won't know about purely because your circumstances are different than ours. We tell you as much as we possibly can about the dog and any background we have been given including their past health. If you are willing to accept that a Rescue Dog may need a lot of your time and you are willing to give him/her your full commitment then please read on and take a look at our orphans.

We do not rehome dogs to people living in flats.

If you would like to read more about us first please go to the "More K9 Info" page.

DESPITE WHAT WE HAVE WRITTEN ABOVE WE ARE GETTING INCREASING NUMBERS OF PEOPLE WHO ASSURE US OF PREVIOUS GSD EXPERIENCE AND AN UNDERSTANDING OF THE NEEDS OF A RESCUE DOG BEING RE-INTEGRATED WITH A NEW FAMILY ONLY TO HAVE THE DOG RETURNED A FEW WEEKS (EVEN DAYS) LATER. THEY TELL US THAT THE DOG IS DOING "EXACTLY" WHAT WE TOLD THEM TO EXPECT !! AND THAT THEY HAVE TRIED AND TRIED (IN A FEW DAYS/WEEKS?) TO DO AS WE HAVE SAID. OR EVEN WORSE WE HAVE ADVISED THEM TO BE AWARE OF THE POSSIBILITY OF e.g. SEPARATION ANXIETY AND TOLD THEM HOW TO AVOID IT - WE GET A PHONE CALL A FEW WEEKS ON AND THE DOG IS THOROUGHLY STRESSED AND CAN WE TAKE HER BACK. WE HAVE TRIED EVERYTHING !! MISGUIDED ADVICE FROM FRIENDS WHICH HAS BEEN THE EXACT OPPOSITE OF WHAT SHOULD HAVE BEEN DONE. (THEY HAVEN’T ASKED US FOR HELP)

So please, please, do not fall into the romanticised idea of rehoming a dog to give it a new start and new home, no matter how well intentioned, if you do not have the experience ESSENTIAL to the dogs needs and a willingness to ask us for advice (which is backed up by experienced behaviourists and trainers) instead of well meaning friends. We make no apologies for this seeming harsh - we want you and your dog to be companions for life, happy in each other's company and this doesn't happen overnight! It takes hard work and dedication in many cases but if you ARE dedicated it will happen!!

Freddy, a compulsive tail chaser, almost had to have his tail amputated because it became infected. It has been a period of hard work and frustration at times but perservence pays off - he is now a champion at agility! His energies are channelled and he has his own "stress toys" for in the home. He is now part of a happy family with Zander. His proud Dad is Ted, director of the rescue and if he can do it with the little free time he has available then so can YOU!

Please get in touch by using the CONTACTS PAGE on either part of the site but please do not use both as they are directed to the same email address. Please ensure your email address is correct and include a contact TELEPHONE NUMBER preferably a landline. In the subject line of the contact please tell us if you are in need of rehoming (REHOME) your dog or wish to adopt (ADOPT) with the name of the dog(s) you are interested in. We will then send you the appropriate forms and any further information you have requested.

BEQUEST FROM GINA COOK

In December 2008 two year old Sasha was
adopted by Gina. Not long afterwards her mum
became ill and tests showed that she had cancer.
She was afraid that she would have to have Sasha
rehomed as her treatment made her feel really
poorly at times and she couldn't walk Sasha. We
weren't going to let that happen and helped out
with walking her whenever it was needed while
Sasha helped her Mum stay strong. Sadly she lost
the fight with cancer last month.

Because of our help, finding Sasha for her and her
love of the GSD she left us a bequest in her will.
Her Aunty Velma has seen that this will be carried
out. One of our "kennels" has been named in her
honour and will be having its "official opening"
soon. (although Prince and Sheeba were the first
to benefit from the new kennel)

Sasha went to Mum's funeral wearing pink her
ribbon. As you can see all the family and friend's
wore pink too.

DUCK & POTATO

IS YOUR DOG "FULLY" INSURED?

We ask the question as we always urge people to have their dogs insured. It can be very expensive if your dog needs major surgery, x-rays and tests.

Rufus' Mum and Dad DID have him insured, they've ALWAYS had him insured BUT.....

he has a condition generally known as AF (Anal Furunculosis) you may know that our Zander has got it and Jazz who was rehomed a few months ago also had just developed it.

The difference between Zander or Jazz and Rufus is that PetPlan cover the first two FOR LIFE. Rufus' insurance has an upper limit that will be paid for any disease/disorder/condition etc. Rufus' claim reached the upper limit just as his Dad fell ill and has been unable to work. Treatment for AF is expensive, an anti rejection drug called cyclosporin sometimes with the addition of steroids and/or antibiotics.

In the short-term we've been able to help out. We aren't asking for donations (though I suspect the family would be extremely grateful) we want you to check your insurance policies out very carefully. You may be paying a lower premium for an inferior service without even realising until it is too late. Whoever your insurer is please make sure that all conditions are covered FOR LIFE or sadly your lower premium may also mean "for life", a foreshortened life because you couldn't afford the treatment.......

Pet Plan are advocating people Insure with companies who deal solely in Animal Insurance as some other companies have started to pull out - you may wish to read what they say.

FIT DOG HYDROTHERAPY

If you would like more information about the hydrotherapy treatment Cassius and Freddie are having please use the link below.

Run by two lovely ladies who will speak to you about your dog's requirements and if a vet referral is required.

Some Pet Insurers include cover for complementary therapies like this so it may be worth checking your policy to see if you can recover some of the cost.

CASS - UPDATE

Young Cass is so full of mischief just like any other young pup - despite the major op on his leg. We're happy to say that the frame and pins have now been removed as the bone has healed well.

The final bandage is off and he's had his first session on the water treadmill - a gentler way of exercise than walking "on dry land".

We are extremely happy to say that we have had some substantial donations which have covered most of the cost of Cass' treatment but there are still ongoing and incidental costs (such as fuel to take him to the vets and back) so if you could donate even just a £1 we would be extremely grateful as every penny counts.

If you can help you can:

Send a cheque to me, Ted, at the address above, made out to Lancs GSD Rescue.

Request our bank details via the contacts page

Donate directly to our vet which is:

Rowan Veterinary Centre,
Hillock Lane
Preston
Lancashire
PR4 1TP

Daddy says I have to say "thank you" to all the lovely people who have helped out. As you can see my frame and bandage are now off but Daddy has one now!! He had an operation on his hand so he'll still be able to walk me when I'm bigger - growing fast aren't I?
