WE ARE NO LONGER ABLE TO ACCEPT DOGS WITH BEHAVIOURAL PROBLEMS FOR REHOMING BUT ARE HAPPY TO GIVE YOU ADVICE TO OVERCOME THE PROBLEMS YOU MAY BE HAVING We are recognised by the Kennel Club as a Breed Specific Rescue. If you are looking to give a home to a rescue GSD in the hope of taking on a dog who is already trained please think again. Many of our dogs do have impeccable manners and are beautifully well trained as they have come from good homes, perhaps from a marriage split up or change of circumstances that mean that a loving owner can no longer take care of their dog as they would wish to. However, some of our dogs have unsettled backgrounds, and may need a lot of support to help re-socialise them. We do not always know the background of our dogs and can only tell you what we have found out about them whilst they have been living with us. There are situations you may come across in your home that upset them that we won't know about purely because your circumstances are different than ours. We tell you as much as we possibly can about the dog and any background we have been given including their past health. If you are willing to accept that a Rescue Dog may need a lot of your time and you are willing to give him/her your full commitment then please read on and take a look at our orphans. DESPITE WHAT WE HAVE WRITTEN ABOVE WE ARE GETTING INCREASING NUMBERS OF PEOPLE WHO ASSURE US OF PREVIOUS GSD EXPERIENCE AND AN UNDERSTANDING OF THE NEEDS OF A RESCUE DOG BEING RE-INTEGRATED WITH A NEW FAMILY ONLY TO HAVE THE DOG RETURNED A FEW WEEKS (EVEN DAYS) LATER. THEY TELL US THAT THE DOG IS DOING "EXACTLY" WHAT WE TOLD THEM TO EXPECT !! AND THAT THEY HAVE TRIED AND TRIED (IN A FEW DAYS/WEEKS?) TO DO AS WE HAVE SAID. OR EVEN WORSE WE HAVE ADVISED THEM TO BE AWARE OF THE POSSIBILITY OF e.g. SEPARATION ANXIETY AND TOLD THEM HOW TO AVOID IT - WE GET A PHONE CALL A FEW WEEKS ON AND THE DOG IS THROUGHLY STRESSED AND CAN WE TAKE HER BACK. WE HAVE TRIED EVERYTHING !! MISGUIDED ADVICE FROM FRIENDS WHICH HAS BEEN THE EXACT OPPOSITE OF WHAT SHOULD HAVE BEEN DONE. (THEY HAVENT ASKED US FOR HELP) So please, please, do not fall into the romanticised idea of rehoming a dog to give it a new start and new home, no matter how well intentioned, if you do not have the experience ESSENTIAL to the dogs needs and a willingness to ask us for advice (which is backed up by experienced behavourists and trainers) instead of well meaning friends. We make no apologies for this seeming harsh - we want you and your dog to be companions for life, happy in each other's company and this doesn't happen overnight! It takes hard work and dedication in many cases but if you ARE dedicated it will happen!! Freddy, a compulsive tail chaser, almost had to have his tail amputated because it became infected. It has been a period of hard work and frustration at times but perservence pays off - he is now a champion at agility! His energies are channeled and he has his own "stress toys" for in the home. He is now part of a happy family with Zander and Betty. His proud Dad is Ted, director of the rescue and if he can do it the little free time he has available then so can YOU! SASHA TATE NOW 4 YEARS OLD - WAITING FOR MUM TO TAKE HER FOR HER BIRTHDAY TEA OF ROAST CHICKEN 23 AUGUST

ALFIE 24 AUGUST Hi Ted Just thought I'd give you an update on our little (or not so little lad anymore) Alfie. Alfie recently had his medical checkup and all his injections - he is now weighing in at a solid 5 stone.. He's finally accepted that swimming in the big reservoir is alot more fun than swimming in our little fish pond. As you can see from the attached photos, even five foot walls can't stop him eyeing up possible swimming locations - he's definitely a water baby. He no longer attacks the hosepipe, in fact he started to enjoy a good washing down with it when he's been out for his exercise through muddy fields. Alfie has a brilliant social attitude to humans and other dogs and will quite happily walk away if another dog growls. His fantastic friendly personality is making him well known in the areas where we take him walking and regularly walkers will stop to say hello and give him plenty of strokes and he's loving all the attention. Teaching him all the usual commands has been really easy (like I said in my last email - he does appear to be an intelligent lad that is quick to learn). He now knows sit, down, wait, leave, come, rollover and is now getting to grips with the command heel - but sometimes his inquisitiveness does get the better of him. The kids wanted Alfie to learn shake a paw to the command of 'skin' (don't ask its a generation thing I think) and when Alfie hears 'skin' up comes the paw. Their mates think Alfie is 'cool' because he puts his skin (paw) to theirs. He will also 'speak' on command which is great when anyone knocks at the door, hopefully anyone that comes to the house that doesn't have good intentions will be put off by his deep bark. I've included a few photos so you can see how he's coming on - hope you enjoy them. Hope the rescue is quiet, my youngest daughter regularly looks on your website to see what orphans there are and reads the updates of those that you have rehomed.
